Spandau is one of the largest boroughs of Berlin. Its history begins in the 13th century when the fortress town was founded here. Now the Zitadelle Berlin (Citadel) is famous as one of the best-preserved Renaissance fortresses in Europe. Spandau old town with its cosy cafes and shops is a large pedestrian zone. The spirit of the past centuries is kept by the picturesque cobbled streets of the Kolk quarter and half-timbered houses.

Spandau is a favourite borough of hikers, cyclists and canoeists. It boasts green forests and idyllic meadows, and its lakes with clear water attract swimmers and families relaxing on the beaches. River Havel with its narrow channels and lush green banks is a perfect place to hire a kayak or canoe.

What is more, Spandau is a big industrial location. It is the only place in the world where BMW motorbikes are produced.

The other boroughs located near Spandau are Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Reinickendorf and Steglitz-Zehlendorf.
