Two hundred years ago, there were fields and mills on the site of Prenzlauer Berg. The neighborhood started building up only in the second half of the 19th century. After the war, the district fell into the hands of the GDR and dived into decline, which peaked in the early 1990s when anarchists and artists lived in half-ruined houses. Later, they rebuilt the squats into lofts, and the less fortunate had to move out. From then on, Prenzlberg has become a prestigious neighborhood filled with bourgeois joys and organic cosmetics stores.
