Checkpoint Charlie is a border checkpoint on Friedrichstrasse, which from 1961 to 1990 served to transfer the allies from West Berlin to East Berlin. After the eastern part of the city was transferred to the GDR, West Berlin was still under the occupation of the United States, France, and England. Checkpoint Charlie has become a symbol of the clash of powers between the Russian and American sectors. Nowadays, there is an installation by Frank Thiele: the American and the Russian soldiers mark the former borderline between the powers. Checkpoint Charlie also hosts a museum that presents the history of the Berlin Wall.
